Cleaning In The Age Of COVID

While there’s still a lot we don’t know about the science behind COVID-19, we do know one thing for sure: the virus can survive on surfaces and infect someone who touches that surface.

Suppose an infected person has sneezed or coughed on a table, counter, chair, hand railing or any object inside your business; every single person who then comes into contact with that object is at high risk of catching coronavirus.

To help our clients and customers understand the most COVID-safe cleaning practices, we’ve outlined some of Safe Work Australia’s guidelines below:

Do You Know The Difference Between Cleaning & Disinfecting?

Cleaning is the act of physically removing dirt, germs, bacteria and viruses from a surface or object. For cleaning, you need to make a solution that combines any detergent with water. Use this solution to break up and remove any oil, dirt and grime.

Disinfecting refers to using chemicals to kill germs, viruses and bacteria living on a surface or object. It’s crucial that you clean a surface before disinfecting because any dirt or grime on a surface can prevent the disinfectant from effectively killing any germs. The following products are suitable for use as a disinfectant:

  • A solution with 70% alcohol or more
  • Chlorine bleach with a concentration of 1000 parts per million
  • Oxygen bleach
  • Products with benzalkonium chloride, or
  • A spray/wipes that contain quaternary ammonium compounds

Any disinfectant containing these ingredients will be effective against COVID-19.

What Does Safe Work Australia Recommend?

Before the coronavirus pandemic hit, regular cleaning was generally sufficient, but Safe Work Australia has officially recommended that Australian businesses also disinfect their surfaces:

“A combination of cleaning and disinfection will be most effective in removing the COVID-19 virus in workplaces when cleaning, and should be used where there is a high volume of workers, customers or visitors that are likely to touch surfaces.”

Frequently touched surfaces might include (but isn’t limited to) any surfaces made of soft plastics, hard plastics, metal surfaces, painted metal surfaces, greased or oiler metal surfaces, wood, laminate, glass, concrete, leather and fabric. These surfaces should be cleaned with detergent then sanitised daily or between each shift change.

Below we have listed some of our favourite and most effective products for various kinds of commercial cleaning and disinfecting.

Agar CounterFlu

This is a hospital-grade disinfectant that can be used on all hard surfaces. Agar Counterflu has been TGA tested and certified against COVID-19 and kills germs and viruses such as Human Influenza Virus and Herpes Simplex Virus. For effective virus disinfection, make sure you leave the disinfectant on the surface for at least 10 minutes before rinsing off.

Custom 4-in-1 Lemon Disinfectant Cleaner

This product is excellent for both cleaning and disinfecting as well as deodorising and re-odourising throughout the day to help keep your business smelling fresh. Most importantly, Custom 4-in-1 Lemon Disinfectant Cleaner contains benzalkonium chloride, which is one of the crucial chemicals we mentioned earlier for effective killing of COVID-19. We also recommend that you leave this product on the surface you are disinfecting for 10 minutes.
